Functional Medicine vs. Traditional Medicine

There is a very big difference between traditional medicine and functional medicine. Functional medicine does extensive testing to look at what is causing your problem or why you have your diagnosis. For example, a patient is diagnosed with Parkinson's disease by his  provider and given medication to treat his symptoms of tremors and gait issues.

As time goes on the patient becomes worse and his symptoms are exacerbated. After being seen by a functional medicine provider and testing is done, and all labs were within reference range. Now the functional provider does not use the reference range. We look at the optimal range. Optimal means the range in which the patient is functioning at his best!! Then, further testing is warranted in order to get to the reason the patient feels badly and why those labs are not optimal. This may require gut testing, heavy metal testing, mineral testing and nutrient testing.

It is a process which involves a great deal of investigation and testing, but it is imperative because the functional medicine approach is one in which the patient and provider work together to help the patient feel his best or rather have " Optimal Health"
